Exploring the Sky is the Historic Research and Exhibition site of Nicholas A. Fischer and a gallery for his artwork as Pescador Khan.

About myself

My name is Nicholas A. Fischer or Pescador Khan for my artistic expression. I founded Exploring the Sky in 2013 as a center to conduct research into everything under the sky and share my artwork with the world. A health scare in the fall of 2013 would change the course of my life, providing me the opportunity to return to school and pursue a dream I had long deferred, transforming my mission.

A return to school was a hope to earn an associate degree in history and learn something about art at Central New Mexico Community College in two years turned into a ten-year quest for knowledge and experience. The quest led to a bachelor's degree in history with minors in Geography & Geospatial Science and Exercise & Sports Science in 2018 from Western Colorado University with opportunities to pursue artistic endeavors. In 2019 I attained a master's degree in museum and gallery management with exhibition specialization from Western Colorado University before attaining a second master's degree in history in 2022 from the University of Northern Colorado. During 2023 I was a National Park Service Park Planning Fellow for the National Council for Preservation Education

I have ten years of experience conducting geographic and historic research (oral, primary, secondary); developing and organizing exhibitions, collections, and special events; assisting with grant proposals; developing and analyzing museum operations; and providing public and private consultations on historic research, publications, exhibitions, and preservation projects. I have contributed to three federal grant requests, three National Significance Surveys, and contributed to seven exhibitions.

I have worked for the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, Leslie J. Savage Library Archives, Gunnison Pioneer Museum, City of Greeley Museums, and the National Park Service.

I have researched regional cultural heritage museums, Indigenous communities of the Southwest and their historic water rights, African American history of Denver and Colorado, early artists of the Gunnison Valley and Colorado, the Dearfield African American agricultural colony and founder O.T. Jackson, John P. Parker, and the Ohio-Kentucky underground railroad during slavery, the life of General Charles Young, the cultural and ecologic geography of the greater Cache la Poudre region, Western exploration, and territorial expansion, the modern Olympic movement, modern Mongolia, and Buddhism and Buddhist art of Japan and Mongolia.

I have historical research expertise in the History of Emotions, which provides my historical analysis a unique perspective on how people navigate their emotions and memories of historical events occurring around them that may have shaped their lives.
